“To go fast, go alone; to go far, go together”
There’s plenty of dispute and conjecture about the origin** of this proverb but it does make a point that seems universally applicable.
Even if we’re not sociable all the time and need our own space, human beings are naturally social. We seem to do best and go furthest when we work together.
Sure some of us are more introverted and don’t really like noisy, crowded social gatherings but we still crave connection. We thrive on interaction with others; some of us like to do this with as many people as possible, and some of us prefer to connect with a select few.
As John Donne wrote back in 1623, “No man is an island entire of itself; every man is a piece of the continent, a part of the main”.
I think this is one of the reasons LinkedIn has been so successful and grown so fast. Being an entrepreneur can be lonely so having access to a focused community with related business interests and global reach is an incredibly important resource.
LinkedIn is brilliant in lots of ways, but I’ve found the Groups function on the platform hasn’t really delivered the traction it was designed to give.
So to make sure the people my content serves have every opportunity to connect, share and learn together I’ve built a private members only group on Facebook, called LinkedIn2Success.
We started in April 2018 and now have over 3000 group members with more getting on board every day.
It’s a community of like-minded entrepreneurs who learn together, focusing on how to grow and scale their businesses through LinkedIn. We share our stories, connect and help each other succeed.
It’s a great vehicle for members to post specific questions about their experience with LinkedIn, get input from others who are further along than they are and yes, even get sage advice from Yours Truly from time to time.
The conversation has a slightly more relaxed tone than the comments steam on LinkedIn itself but it’s still very focused and professional.
Here’s one recent example of a post from one of our members:
“Okay I am celebrating today!
Landed two guest podcast spots for next month & one teaching opportunity in April all to do with my Love of LinkedIn! And another guest podcast interview…”
And an example of a request for advice from someone who already has a large LinkedIn network but wasn’t getting the traction he wanted:
“I’ve got 17,000+ lovely connections and I’m not sharing much with them. I’d like to change that. I’m happy to commit 2-3 hours a week to engage in LinkedIn activity that will share some value and build my brand. Not sure whether to focus on articles, posts, commenting on others’ posts, live video, recorded video or all of the above Any suggestions? ”
In the first case, the group was there to share the celebration and encourage. In the second case there was a rapid response from other members offering heaps of practical advice.
All for free!
So if you’re out there trying to build a business, finding it tough and lonely why not come and join us. LinkedIn is still the most powerful social media platform for building a business brand and generating qualified leads without spending money on advertising.
Our Facebook group provides a safe space to share your struggles and triumphs, learn from others and give a hand to those less experienced than yourself.
Ready to get on board? Just head over to LinkedIn2Success on Facebook and request to join.
P.S. **If you’re interested in finding out whether this is an old African proverb or has some other origin, Andrew Whitby researched its origins and wrote a great article on this.
